Transmission

Using the latest in state-of-the-art technology, we will install a safe and effective cleaner to suspend harmful varnish and sludge from the transmission valve body, torque converter and lines and install new high-tech fluid with conditioners.

Just like your engine, you should have your transmission serviced regularly. When Legacy Automotive Inc. services your transmission, we:

  • Remove and inspect the pan
  • Clean or replace the screen
  • Clean the pan
  • Reinstall the pan
  • Install a new gasket
  • Replace old transmission fluid with new, high quality fluid
  • Make any additional needed changes and adjustments

By replacing the old transmission fluid, the expert team at Legacy Automotive Inc. essentially gives your vehicle’s transmission new life. The new fluid restores your clutch’s holding power. This reduces slip and heat production. Additionally, flushing the old fluid gets rid of small bits of clutch material and metal shavings, which can damage your transmission by clogging passages and wedging themselves between moving parts. Getting rid of the old fluid reduces wear within the transmission.

Replacing old fluid with new also provides better lubrication within the transmission, which boosts the holding ability of the transmission’s friction components. Improved lubrication also results in less heat. By decreasing friction and heat, your transmission will work better for a longer amount of time. A simple service can save you the money and time that come with a major transmission repair or replacement.

There are two types of transmissions most commonly used in vehicles. Automatic and manual. Manual transmissions are simpler than automatics, but still require a trained specialist to keep up on maintenance and repairs.

Automatic transmissions have many parts to them. A lot of parts to them. Most automatic transmissions can have more than 30 clutches in them. They work on hydraulic pressure to control the valves that move the clutches around. When repairing an automatic transmission, not only are the clutches replaced, but the valve body needs to be inspected and cleaned. The valve body is the heart of the transmission. The valve body contains what most people would call ball bearings that act as valves when the pressure changes. These pressure changes happen according with the revolutions of the motor. The torque converter is what provides this pressure to make the shifting work in a proper manner.

When repairing an automatic transmission, attention needs to be placed with making sure all of the parts are properly cleaned and drained. Automatic transmissions in most large vehicles and SUVs can hold up to 10 quarts of transmission fluid. The correct type of fluid must also be used to not to damage the parts inside of the transmission. Automatic transmission repair should be left only to the trained specialist. Automatic transmission fluid should be changed out (depending on the manufactures recommendations) about every 15 thousand miles.

Manual transmissions are not as complicated as automatics. There still are many parts to them. Disassembly and reassembly is important. The clutch is one of the major reasons that a manual transmission is brought in for repair. Throw-out bearings are a common problem with manual transmissions. The throw-out bearing is what separates the clutch plate from the engine. Replacing the bearing is not that complicated, but does require that the transmission is separated from the engine.

Transmission repair and maintenance is vital for your vehicles performance. A properly maintained transmission will not only assure that you will get where you are going but also give you better fuel economy. Your technician at Legacy Automotive has the proper training to keep you vehicle on the road and running smoothly.
